Montana’s Revenue Potential
An economic study conducted by a Montana accounting firm examined capital investment, job creation, wages, royalties and tax revenues associated with coalbed natural gas development in Montana's area of the Powder River Basin. The results are exciting for the state and its citizens.

The study from the Montana accounting firm Anderson ZurMuehlen & Co. PC, is based on a projected 22-year life of CBNG development. Study findings are based on an economic value using natural gas priced at the wellhead at an average price of $4.00 per thousand cubic feet (Mcf). The findings include the following potential benefits to Montana:

  • Royalties to Montana schools - $253.5 million
  • Royalties to Montana State General Fund - $426 million
  • Production tax paid to Montana for schools, state and local governments and other agencies - $1.1 billion
  • Potential for creation of up to 736 jobs
  • Estimate of total wages is $264 million
  • Estimate of total purchases of goods and services is $1.3 billion
  • The total economic benefits potential equals $4.2 billion
