Coalbed natural gas producer recognized for environmental stewardship
October 29, 2004

SHERIDAN, WY - Fidelity Exploration & Production Company was recognized recently with a major environmental stewardship award from the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission (IOGCC). The Award was presented at the IOGCC Annual Meeting in Oklahoma City on October 18, 2004.

In a news release announcing the award, the IOGCC remarked that their award program “recognized the best of the best in environmental stewardship.” Fidelity earned the award for its sponsorship of a three-year soil and crop testing program called the Tongue River Agronomic Monitoring and Protection Program (AMPP). Fidelity started the monitoring program in July 2003 to monitor water and soil conditions for any potential impacts from the discharge of water produced in conjunction with coalbed natural gas. For more information on this unique soil monitoring program, visit www.tongueriverampp.com.

“We are working very hard to provide accurate, scientifically based information regarding the impacts of coalbed natural gas production in the area,” said Mike Caskey, Fidelity’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “As the first producer of this energy resource in Montana, it is important to base decisions on scientifically verifiable information. The AMPP has built a baseline of information that can be compared to current data to determine if changes are occurring.” Fidelity was also honored with a public outreach and education award from the national office of the Bureau of Land Management in June 2004. The BLM award was also related to the company’s coalbed natural gas operations.

The IOGCC, representing the governors of 30 member and seven associate states, promotes the conservation and efficient recovery of domestic oil and natural gas resources while protecting health, safety and the environment. Established by the charter member states’ governors in 1935, it is among the oldest, largest and most effective interstate compacts in the nation.

Fidelity Exploration & Production Company is engaged in oil and natural gas acquisition, exploration and production throughout the United States and in the Gulf of Mexico. Fidelity E&P is an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of MDU Resources Group, Inc., a multidimensional natural resource enterprise traded on the New York Stock Exchange as “MDU.” For more information, visit the company’s Web site at
